Helping Hand

about

Helping Hand is the 7th track recorded for my Bedroom Sessions challenge, where I am writing and recording a new song or piece of music every week for a year!

It is a happy little ditty that I hope will put a smile on your face and help you re-evaluate things when times are tough.

There's a few thoughts behind this song, firstly I'm telling myself that it is ok to ask for help. I'm awful at asking others to do anything for me, even when I need help and it is offered I often turn it down as I hate to inconvenience anyone. Yet I am always first in line to help others and will gladly go out of my way to make someone's life easier! I'm not sure why I find it so hard when the shoe is on the other foot, but that's how it is!

Secondly after seeing a meme that said something along the lines of 'British people do not sing with a British accent, which shows we are putting it on' I decided I wanted to have a little fun and record the vocal in a quintessential English accent!

Finally I thought it would be fun to showcase some acoustic instruments as I haven't done an acoustic only song yet in this challenge. So I grabbed my acoustic guitar, ukulele, cello, shakers and melodica, instrumentation that I think compliment the meaning and overall feel of the song.

It's a bit of fun and I hope it brightens your day. It also shows off some of my acoustic skills for those interested in my remote recording services.

You can watch the full performance video over on my YouTube channel and check out the Bedroom Session episode to see the whole writing and recording process!

lyrics

I know you just want a lazy day
But sometimes things don’t go your way
You might be overwhelmed and feeling the burn
No time to sleep just keep on keeping on
Get up, put a smile on your face
Walk through the world of the human race
It might be cold and lonely
But all of us are treading water in the sea

Lift your eyes out of your spotlight
Take a breath and trust it’ll turn out right
You might be lost, don’t know where to go
Blindly trying to find your way home
Swallow your pride and take a stand
There’s nothing wrong asking for a helping hand

Waking up in the morning
Empty as a fuel warning
Living life in a fatigued haze
Try’na milk every minute you can find in the day
Gotta keep on moving
Soon you will be grooving
No rest for a dreamers head
There’s plenty of time for you to sleep when you’re dead

Lift your eyes out of your spotlight
Take a breath and trust it’ll turn out right
You might be lost, don’t know where to go
Blindly trying to find your way home
Swallow your pride and take a stand
There’s nothing wrong asking for a helping hand
